Continuing its proud legacy of national service and sustainable development, Sumathi Holdings is proud to announce a major milestone in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy journey with the official launch of its newest venture – Sumathi Energy (Pvt) Ltd.
Under the visionary leadership of Mr. Jagath Sumathipala, Chairman of Sumathi Holdings, the group has embarked on an ambitious clean energy initiative with the development of a 5-megawatt solar power plant in Eheliyagoda. This project marks a significant step toward addressing the nation’s growing energy needs through sustainable, future-focused solutions.
Currently under development, the Eheliyagoda solar power farm is designed to generate 5MW of clean electricity that will be directly supplied to the national grid, powering thousands of homes and businesses. The plant will not only reduce Sri Lanka’s dependency on fossil fuels but will also significantly contribute to lowering the country’s carbon emissions.
“With Sumathi Energy, we are taking a bold and proactive step towards building a greener and more energy-secure Sri Lanka,” said Mr. Jagath Sumathipala at the project’s official launch. “This 5MW solar facility is just the beginning of our long-term vision to deliver responsible, renewable energy solutions that meet national and global sustainability goals.”
The location in Eheliyagoda was carefully selected for its high solar irradiance, ensuring maximum efficiency and consistent power generation throughout the year. Once operational, the electricity produced will strengthen Sri Lanka’s renewable energy infrastructure and support the national goal of achieving 70% renewable energy by 2030.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the project is expected to deliver local economic value by creating employment opportunities in solar engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance. As part of its long-term commitment, Sumathi Energy also aims to invest in capacity-building and technical training programs to nurture a skilled renewable energy workforce within Sri Lanka.
Aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) – this initiative stands as a testament to the power of private sector leadership in driving national development and environmental stewardship.
The Eheliyagoda solar plant is set to be fully operational in the coming months, with plans for future expansions already under discussion. This marks not just a new chapter for Sumathi Holdings, but a transformational moment for Sri Lanka’s clean energy future.
